Condition
Fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
Fat build-up in the liver, linked to weight and metabolic health; can progress to inflammation (NASH) and scarring.
See a clinician
Some causes of fatty liver disease (nafld) need medical care, not self-treatment. Seek help for any of these:
- Yellowing of skin/eyes, abdominal swelling, confusion, or vomiting blood (signs of advanced liver disease)
- Easy bruising, marked fatigue, or unexplained weight loss
What may help
Remedies studied for fatty liver disease (nafld), ranked by strength of evidence.
- B Vitamin E nutrient
In non-diabetic adults with biopsy-proven NASH, improves liver inflammation/steatosis (but not fibrosis).
- C Fish oil (omega-3) supplement
May modestly reduce liver fat, but no clear effect on liver enzymes or histology.
- C Milk thistle herb
May modestly improve liver enzymes; effects on liver structure/fibrosis are unproven.
The cornerstone is weight loss and metabolic control. In non-diabetic, biopsy-proven NASH, vitamin E has the best (though imperfect) evidence; omega-3 and milk thistle are weaker.
