HMB
Also: beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate, β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate
A leucine metabolite that modestly preserves muscle — but adds little once you exercise.
Evidence by condition
Each grade reflects the research for HMB and that condition specifically.
- CSarcopenia (age-related muscle loss)
HMB alone modestly increased fat-free mass in older adults, but provided no additional benefit on top of an exercise program; trials are small and mixed.

HMB is an anti-catabolic leucine metabolite. It may help preserve muscle in people who are not exercising, but once resistance training is in place it adds little — so training (and adequate protein) should come first.
